Magritte & Dalí
THIS TOUR HAS SOLD OUT. ADD YOUR NAME TO THE WAITLIST FOR A MAY 18 TOUR.
Join Dalí docent Walt Blenner, AB'81, as he leads us on a special tour of this first-of-its-kind special exhibition dedicated to the world’s two most celebrated surrealists.
Rene Magritte and Salvador Dali were two of the most celebrated surrealists of their time. Their subject matter and influences often overlapped and their works were frequently shown together at exhibits throughout the 1930s. But while the similarities in surrealist style were evident, each had very different ways of expressing it in paintings and they lived their lives in completely incongruent ways. Dali was the showman, the master of painting technique, the egoist who inserted himself in most of his works. Magritte, a Belgian surrealist, sought solitude, shunned the limelight and was the master of the idea, if not the painting technique.
This exhibit is a detailed examination of surrealism as expressed by two artists who approached the same target from different angles. It is an in-depth comparison, and the works on exhibit are more of a whisper of nuance than a roar of surrealistic bombast.
After the tour, you'll have an hour to explore other parts of the museum, including the new Dreams of Dalí virtual reality experience.
Join us afterward at a self-hosted lunch at the Hangar Restaurant across the street.
This tour is limited to 15 people. If it fills up, we might organize a second tour on May 18.
