Sixth Annual UnCommon Core: Mid-Florida Style
A day of intellectual stimulation, networking, and socializing.
The Alumni Club of Mid-Florida is pleased to present our sixth annual UnCommon Core: Mid-Florida Style. Informative and provocative lectures by three distinguished scholars will be the centerpiece of a day of intellectual stimulation, networking, and socializing. A panelists’ roundtable will conclude the day. Breakfast and lunch are included. Wine and beer available for a donation. See below for the link for a special hotel rate.
Savas Tay, associate professor at the Institute for Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago, will discuss “How To Manipulate Cells and Gene Pathways To Help Cure Diseases.” As part of his talk, he will give an overview of IME, UChicago’s first school of engineering. He is a systems biologist and bioengineer who works in the space where biology, physics, and engineering intersect. His overarching goal is to understand how biological systems work from an engineer’s perspective.
Thomas Christensen, professor of music and the humanities at the University of Chicago, will talk about “Innovation and Tradition in Lin Miranda’s Hamilton.” He has particularly focused on topics of historical music theory and has recently combined his love of musical theater with his academic career by teaching an annual “signature” course in the College entitled “The Making and Meaning of the American Musical,” from which this talk is derived.
Elizabeth Aranda, a sociology professor and associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of South Florida, will discuss “What It Means to Belong: The Lived Experience of Undocumented Young Adults in Florida.”
For out-of-town visitors, a special hotel rate of $139 plus tax is available at the Courtyard Marriott. Book your University of Chicago Alumni Club group rate by 01/01/2019 here.
