FIFTH ANNUAL UNCOMMON CORE: MID-FLORIDA STYLE

drmonamangatOur signature event, the fifth annual UnCommon Core: Mid-Florida style, provides a day of thought-provoking lectures and discussions.

This year will feature the following speakers:

Mona V. Mangat, MD, a member and past board chair of Doctors for America, is a board-certified allergist and immunologist in St. Petersburg, FL. She currently practices at Bay Area Allergy & Asthma. Dr. Mangat will discuss "The Real Dirt on the Hygiene Hypothesis: Are We Keeping It Too Clean And Causing More Allergies?".

Read more about Dr. Mangat here!

(Due to a family emergency, Prof. Jack Gilbert unfortunately had to cancel his entire Florida trip.  We are very grateful to Dr. Mangat for so graciously stepping in at the last moment.  She will be speaking on a similar topic to what Prof. Gilbert had planned.)

Raymond Arsenault, the John Hope Franklin Professor of Southern History at the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg, will discuss "Jocks for Justice: Activism from Arthur Ashe to Colin Kaepernick." His forthcoming biography of Arthur Ashe will be published by Simon and Schuster in August 2018. Ray will have copies of his earlier books, including “Freedom Riders: 1961 and the Struggle for Racial Justice,” available for sale and signing.

Craig Pittman, a prize-winning journalist who covers the environment for the Tampa Bay Times, will discuss his newest book, “Oh, Florida!” – which humorously covers the many ways in which Florida is trying to kill us -- shark bites, lightning, sinkholes and rising sea levels, among them. Craig will have copies of his book for sale and signing.

This is a chance to relive those days on the Quad when you couldn’t wait to continue the discussion outside of class. If you like the Harper Lecture, you will love this. Join us for a full day of lectures, including a round table discussion with the speakers at day’s end. Breakfast and lunch are included in the price. Wine and beer will be available at additional cost at lunch and after the program. For out-of-town visitors, a special hotel rate of $149 plus tax is available at the Courtyard Marriott.
